Conductivity is the measurement of waters ability to pass an electrical current. This value is a representation of the level of ions in the water and is a very good indicator for water quality. The measurement of conductivity in water can help to identify the concentration of solutions, the purity of the water, as well as the detection of contaminants.

When measuring conductivity for the introduction of pollution or to maintain a good water quality you are generally looking for decreases or increases over time. Depending on the source will determine whether this is a sudden or gradual change. For example conductivity measurement can be very effective when monitoring surface water as it can be used as an indication of the pollution via agricultural runoff or the introduction of sewage.
